Meet NEANN's 2019 Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Sheila Gephart, PhD, RN
Associate Professor, University of Arizona

Dr. Sheila Gephart has been a nurse for 21 years and has spent the last six years as a nurse scientist.

As an RN, Dr. Sheila Gephart cared for pre-term infants, vulnerable to a condition so deadly, (necrotizing enterocolitis, NEC), that it fueled her commitment to eliminate NEC and save babies using implementation science and informatics.  She applied big data to develop and test a NEC risk algorithm, GutCheckNEC. Then, funded by AHRQ (K08),the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Nurse Faculty Scholar; 2014), and the National Library of Medicine she has pursued her quest to eradicate NEC using parent-engagement, accessible NEC-Zero tools and usable clinical decision support technology that is operable across Electronic Health Record systems.

She is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona. She studies technical and parent-engaged solutions to reduce the burden of necrotizing enterocolitis. Her research has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Library of Medicine. She is an active member of the NEC Society Scientific Advisory Council, the International Neonatal Consortium, and the Editorial Board of Advances in Neonatal Care. She loves to drink coffee, spend time with her 3 teenage daughters, watch murder mysteries with her husband, and disappear into the wilderness.
